We’ve discussed before that hemp biomass will soon overtake the cannabinoid category as the industry frontrunner - bringing us responsible solutions for rethinking our country’s infrastructure - from building materials and fibers to paper and plastics. So, In that space, industrial hemp can absorb approximately 15 tonnes of CO2 (Lhoist 2016) making it one of the fastest CO2-to-biomass conversion tools. Hemp begins sequestering carbon the moment it is seeded and is the perfect carbon sink because it absorbs more CO2 per hectare, annually than any other commercial crop or commercial forestry.
Carbon sequestration will become a huge revenue stream while cleaning up our planet.
I learned that as humans living and working in our day-to-day lives, we put 45 gigatons of CO2 into the atmosphere. To get to carbon-neutral that number has to get to zero. And there are only so many tweaks you can make to cars, trains, planes, factories… you get my drift. Biological carbon sequestration is a much faster and more effective means - trapping the carbon in the soil.
Steven Gluckstern, founder of Santa Fe Farms shared an interesting comparison. One acre of hemp and one acre of Amazon Rain Forest sequester about the same amount of CO2. The key difference is the acre of rain forest takes 12 years to grow. The acre of hemp only takes about 4-5 months. When the crop is harvested, the hemp can be slow-smoldered, not burned, to create biochar. This charcoal-esque product can then be mixed with other nutrients and returned into the soil.
According to a paper by Holon Ecosystem Consultants, hemp might give as much as 13 tons of charcoal per hectare annually, which would triple the output of other popular biomass crops. That said, both the act of sequestering carbon through farming the hemp and creating Biochar will provide additional revenue streams for our hemp farmers while making the world a better place.
